Sunset over Fremantle

The committee has assembled an exciting program of Workshops in the Mainstreet to be held on Wednesday 18 March. Delegates will travel from Fremantle by train to their destinations. The workshops will showcase the development of Mainstreets in the Perth metropolitan area and include a mix of past, current and future plans to rediscover the heart and soles of city and town centres.

Delegates will be asked to select their preferred Workshop Tour via the registration form, places on some tours are limited so we encourage delegates to register now to ensure their preferences are available.

Workshop Tour 1: Rejuvenating Older Centres: Two Different Models

Town of Claremont:

The Town of Claremont is undergoing unprecedented development. The next 4 years will see close to $600 million worth of development take place in the town centre and around the Claremont Football Oval. The new town centre will challenge the historical mainstreet whilst introducing 3 new pedestrian focused streets and a new town square.

City of Subiaco:

This workshop will focus on the strategic challenges that the City faces as they relate to mainstreet principles including the Subiaco Central Development Plan: a 15 year strategic plan for the town centre, Liquor Licensing challenges of managing Subiaco as an entertainment destination and the City’s contemporary incentive based approach to heritage.

Workshop Tour 2: Highway-based Town Centres

Town of Victoria Park:

In response to the increasing need for an identifiable Town Centre, the Town is working with the owners of the adjacent “big box” shopping centre to create a vibrant Town Centre, providing for the location of places of appropriate civic and cultural focus, that build on the existing retail and commercial nature of Albany Highway. A Structure Plan for the Town Centre is currently being developed and the completed project may be presented at the workshop.

City of Gosnells;

The Town Centre urban regeneration is nationally renowned for its bold grass roots approach. Action to redress Gosnells Town Centre's declining economy, high commercial vacancy rates, inadequate services and infrastructure and general community dissatisfaction has resulted in increased sustainability for the Centre and the region. This workshop highlights the importance of establishing a contextually rich urban framework and regeneration program that strategically support the dynamics of town centres.

Workshop Tour 3: Transit Oriented Development Along a New Rail Line

City of Cockburn:

Cockburn Central is the first transit orientated regional strategic centre built in the southern corridor of Perth. Immediately adjacent to the railway station and the Kwinana Freeway; it is proposed to be a vibrant connected community, seamlessly linked to efficient public transport. A presentation and discussion of current planning and recent developments will be jointly facilitated by the City of Cockburn and Landcorp, focusing on the planning of the town centre and the various developments currently under construction.

Town of Kwinana:

Wellard Village was the first dedicated transit orientated centre developed in Perth and has since been the recipient of seven industry awards including the Planning Institute of Australia’s Award for Excellence in Environmental Planning and Conservation WA, the Housing Industry Association’s GreenSmart: WA Development of the Year and the Landscape Industries Association’s Best Environmental/Rehabilitation/Conservation Project (WA).

Workshop Tour 4: From Cut-Off to Central: Managing Conflict in Inner Urban Mainstreets

Town of Vincent:

A walk-through of the town centre will be followed by discussion of current planning and recent developments, including how to keep the existing centre viable during major redevelopment. During the lunch break there will guided tours of some of the major recent developments in the centre. In the afternoon, there will be a facilitated workshop to explore some the issues facing an inner city municipality in maintaining the economic and social viability of a number of town centres in a small area.

City of Fremantle:

Fremantle is a fascinating place full of heritage buildings, speciality shops and people just hanging out. During this workshop the tour will visit different areas in need of place making to identify solutions using a practical observation checklist. Everybody will then head back to the Council building to see which group can come up with the best, most creative ideas. This session will be led by Mary Del Casale, Place Making Consultant and Community Planning Facilitator, and promises to be a lot of fun.
